We were also asked about the origins of this little poem recently. For anyone interested, Leo Marks (shown to the right) was a World War II British Spymaster, who published his war memoirs “Between Silk and Cyanide” some years ago – highly recommended as a good read! (Leo Marks (1998). Between Silk and Cyanide. London: HarperCollins. ISBN 0-00-255944-7)
Wikipedia has a shorter version of the story here. This article also offers some interesting and topical sidelights, and adds a little more to the wartime story. Who would have thought a code-maker’s key might end up in a speech at a high sociity wedding?
