Gondolieri Released.

The nine member Gondolieri family is now available for purchase from Myfonts and Fontspring.

The design of Gondolieri has its origins in an experiment to combine aspects of Didone and Tuscan typefaces. The result has a continental ‘Italianate‘ feel. If you wonder what lies behind the name, just look at the lower case ‘f’…definite overtones of a Venetian Gondola here, and throughout the design. Gondolieri is offered in regular and bold weights, as well as a simplified form for smaller text use. All of these are available in three widths. The Gondolieri family has a lovely Didone, ‘Belle Epoch’ feel for use in design, posters, book covers and so forth. An extensive range of Opentype features, including ligatures and terminal forms is included in the regular and bold faces.

Signage and Legibility

We’ve referred to our ‘Beeching‘ project before, a small family to be based on Railway Station nameboards, yielding a nicely legible set of typefaces ideal for use in large scale signage. We think this design provides a clear demonstration that old fashioned details, such as serifs and ligatures serve to enhance legibility.

Nine Members of the Family

We’re nearly ready to release the Gondolieri family after just a few more last minute finishing touches.

Gondolieri is a family of nine typefaces, based on an elaborated Didone design idea, and offers both display and text faces. It has something of an Italianate feel. Here are the nice members of the family:

Ever noticed how anaemic many ‘Bold’ faces can look…just barely different from their associated regular forms. This is something that we had decided that Gondolieri Bold wouldn’t suffer from! Sketches Worth Keeping…

Our designer was rummaging through some old sketches the other day and found this interesting little item. We think this idea-a sort of subtly bifurcated Sans Serif -has a great deal of possibility and will be encouraging its further development when some of our present projects are a little nearer completion.

We still feel that this is the best way to start off a new typeface design-with pen (usually a fountain pen in our designer’s case) and paper. Computer technology has it’s place further down the track, with careful construction by node, line and curve, but for freedom of expression and exploring ideas without restriction you can’t go past the partnership of wet inky nib and paper…
