Just finished a ‘digital oil painting’, using the Procreate app (no connection except as satisfied user) of a locomotive.
This is a London and North Western Railway Webb Compound, one of the “Dreadnought” 2-2-2-0´s, built between 1884-8 and scrapped 1903-05, No. 2063 “Huskisson”, a tribute by the LNWR to the politician killed by Stephenson’s Rocket at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. He had the sad distinction of being the first recorded railway fatality.
The locomotive is replenishing its water supply from water troughs between the rails.
St Chad’s church, Pattingham, near Wolverhampton. Painted in digital pencil and watercolour while staying indoors on a very wild and woolly afternoon. I used to stay in Pattingham sometimes, with my Aunt and Uncle, on trips back to the UK.
This started of as a quick architectural sketch from imagination – two weeks later it’s finished, so anything but quick. Lots of detail and I had great fun, but I’m not sure what others will make of it. I think there’s inspiration from St Pancras Station, St Georges College and a Jacobean manor house on an Antiques Roadshow found its way in here, along with who knows what else?
Though I’m still working (from home), isolation has left me with a little more time on my hands than is normally the case. I decided to invest a little of that time in getting back into active modelling- though I’ve precious little in the way of materials on hand. Hence, after some reflection, I set to with my computer and drawing software to try and develop the artwork for a simple card kit. I’ve taken a somewhat traditional approach, inspired by the card kits of my early modelling days:- Bilteezi, Superquick, Builder Plus and Prototype. Thus, you’ll find brick textures that resemble those from Builder Plus, roll up chimney pots like Superquick, and drawn (not cutout) windows like Bilteezi. I’m quite pleased with the look of the result. However, I’ve neither card nor access for a colour printer for the moment to test it out. Thus, I’m sharing the result on here with an invitation for anyone interested to download a copy (I suggest downloading the pdf: https://greater-albion.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/goods-office-no-background.pdf), print it and assemble it. Would love to receive any feedback and perhaps the odd photo of any results. A full sized jpg if preferred is here: https://greater-albion.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/goods-office-no-background.jpg
Great Western Railway Manor “Lydham Manor” and Hall class locos travelling through the English West Country. This is an oil painting I did in 1997, with a little digital restoration to correct the way the colours had aged. I made a bad mistake at the time, using cold-pressed (instead of boiled) linseed oil as a medium. Lovely if you want to impart a golden brown colour to your work over time, but otherwise not a thing to repeat!
