        Streamline silver locomotive speed elegant

Easter has let me finish the next Digital painting project.

‘Silver Jubilee’ revisits the locomotive ‘Silver Fox’, this time  at the start of its career. The portrait is painted to emphasise the contrast between the Silver, Art Deco steam train and the grimy Victorian landscape of a British Northern city in the middle 30s.

The LMS Turbomotive, No 6202, built in 1935 and one of the last serious attempts in Britain to fundamentally re-think the design of the steam locomotive. Seen here early in her life, before rebuilding as conventional Steam Locomotive and subsequent dramatic and sad events.

      • Ready for the Off

“Ready for the Off,” inspired by a photograph shared with me by Adrian Vaughan, a late 19th century view of a Johnson 4-4-0 on the Midland Railway. A true bit of elegance hailing from Derby.

      • Southern Belle

Posted at 1:22 pm by gatf, on July 9, 2023

Have been painting this one for a few weeks now, and used a drab drizzly Sunday to finish it off.

“Southern Belle” – elegant travel in Edwardian Pullman style, hauled by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway 4-6-2 tank locomotive “Bessborough”. How rail travel should be… so much better than today’s electric marvels .

Have finished another locomotive portrait painting. “Polar Star at Conwy”. Britannia Class Locomotive 70026 leaving the Conwy Tubular Bridge by the base of the castle walls, late in the afternoon and in a voluminous cloud of steam. Another digital painting project with tablet and stylus, executed in an oil style.

      • GWR “County of Carnarvon” No. 3823 leaving Paddington

1920s 4-4-0 digital locomotive oil Paddintcon painting Steam

Great Western County Class “County of Carnarvon” (the GWR’s spelling) No.3823 leaving Paddington with a mixed passenger and parcels train in the 1920s.

This is my latest digital painting project. Useless information of the day- the software tells me this took a little over 36 hours of actual painting time and consists of a little over 52,000 brush strokes.
