      • Taking Water from the troughs

Posted at 1:51 pm by gatf, on May 29, 2020

Just finished a ‘digital oil painting’, using the Procreate app (no connection except as satisfied user) of a locomotive.

This is a London and North Western Railway Webb Compound, one of the  “Dreadnought” 2-2-2-0´s, built between 1884-8 and scrapped 1903-05, No. 2063 “Huskisson”, a tribute by the LNWR to the politician killed by Stephenson’s Rocket at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. He had the sad distinction of being the first recorded railway fatality.

The locomotive is replenishing its water supply from water troughs between the rails.

      • Manor and Hall in the West Country

Posted at 9:08 am by gatf, on April 26, 2020
Image may contain: train, grass and track

Great Western Railway Manor “Lydham Manor” and Hall class locos travelling through the English West Country. This is an oil painting I did in 1997, with a little digital restoration to correct the way the colours had aged. I made a bad mistake at the time, using cold-pressed (instead of boiled) linseed oil as a medium. Lovely if you want to impart a golden brown colour to your work over time, but otherwise not a thing to repeat!

      • GWR No.16 “Brunel”

Posted at 1:13 pm by gatf, on April 13, 2020
Image may contain: train, outdoor and sky

        My latest digital artwork…
GWR “Armstrong Class” 4-4-0 No.16 “Brunel” at Westborne Park in the middle 1890s, and just finished today with extra time on my hands due to the lockdown.
This painting is a high resolution digital painting made using tablet and stylus. The better quality drawing apps can produce surprisingly good results and be amazingly like the natural media paintings that I’ve done for decades.

      • Not Quite Finished Yet

Posted at 2:53 pm by gatf, on August 4, 2019

I’ve been working on this project for some weeks, and there are still some vital elements to add, but I thought people might enjoy seeing it’s evolution over time. Will post the finished worked when it’s done.

      • Digital Image Filters

Posted at 10:18 pm by gatf, on July 21, 2019

The results of trying some digital filters on my painting of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway ‘Atlantic’ Locomotive “Beachy Head”. The painting was done digitally using the Art Set IV Application, an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.  Above is the original painting. Below are the filtered results, mostly using JixiPics’ filter applications. It’s a simple approach to making alternate images, and has to be applied carefully, but never the less, I rather like some of these!
